ASCORBIC ACID USED IN ACID DYEING FLEECE

I ran out of acid for dyeing, usually I use white vinegar, but I had some out of date ascorbic acid and wondered if I could use that instead. I use Fibrecraft Dyes from George Weil

After much research and help from my spinning friends in UK Spin-a-holics

I found that maybe a stronger solution than used in citric acid might work. I also learnt that moreacid can be added along the way if all the dye isn't absorbed or the residue is wanted for more fibre.

I used two heaped measures of ascorbic acid - flat measure was 5mg, dissolved in hot water up to 100mls and added to the dye bath instead of vinegar.

I made up 3pints of water, 2 ounces of fibre, 50mls Glauber salts (sodium sulfate ),  and 100mls ascorbic acid - doubled in each pot.

The left was meant to be Teal the right Mulberry

I used measures based on previous dyeing but I think the stock pots may be made up slightly differently and I clearly need more yellow in the teal.

This was the dye pot after being exhausted, so clearly all the dye was used up. This was red 80% /blue 20% ( Yesterday's dye had too much black so I intend to blend the two reds together in carding.)

This was the second lot, although a slight amount of dye came out in the first wash the rinse was clear.
Blue 80% red 20% black 2.5%

Leicester Longwool locks from Siri's second year fleece. Thanks to Yew Tree farm

Although I blended these colours earlier I will probably blend them on hand carders this time.

This is for a project for a grandson based on one I did for his sister.
